Self Disicpline
“Only the disciplined ones in life are free”
Eliud Kipchoge, marathon running
Self discipline is not about having a 'strict' instructor. It is about fostering the ability of a student to be able to make the right choices. From going for a run at 5am, putting the phone down or choosing vegetables over chocolate.
It isn't simply telling a student this is what they need to do, they need to understand through experience that when you show self-discipline, you achieve a goal. That goal becomes an intrinsic reward, that is one that is internal and not an gift or prize.
We provide opportunities for ALL students to be successful. This is something that is not always easy in every sport, only one team wins a football match or the cup. In Karate, we show students how a positive attitude, self belief and determination can lead to achieving something individual.
This could be successfully learning a new move or kata or evening earning the next belt. This is not dependent on others.
With frequent success, the student recognises the value of their own self discipline in helping them improve.
Students also need to be aware of the opposite course, one where they are not successful through lack of practice and self discipline. Through carefully crafted moments, we ensure that we help pick students back up when it goes wrong and they learn, not punished for their failures.
